I then gave them 2 stat points to be applied as they see fit so they felt better about not getting the same treatment and could have an 17 if desired. When the other players found out, I explained that it was killing the new player to not have the one stat maxed out. He was irrationally bothered that he could not start with his primary stat maxed out in D&D. A new player wanted to play a new character. For example, I told all the players to create their characters with the point buy system (35 pts instead of normal 27).
It's a game after all and fun is why we play. I've done this when it increases the player's fun.
